40 sen a kilo for your old computers
By K.W. MAK
Old computers may not have any value in running the latest software, but you can still get 40 sens a kilogramme out of the machine.
The payment will be made to anyone who sends computers to any of the nine collection centres in Petaling Jaya except the SS3 Residents Association collection centre (where all proceeds would go towards the association instead).
The PC Recycling campaign is a joint effort between Dell, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), SK Sri Kelana and eight Petaling Jaya residents associations to ensure that old computers do not end up in the landfill.

"From 2004 to 2007 we've successfully collected 73,000 kilograms worth of PCs and related accessories in Penang," said Dell Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd senior manager of services Yeoh Seow Ping.
"From 2006 till July 2007, Dell has collected close to 9,000 kilograms or 729 units of PCs in PJ."
Yeow said the computers contained metals and other materials that could be reused.
PJ mayor Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said the council fully supported any initiative that could bring about more recycling efforts, but stressed that the council could not do it alone.
"There must be partnership from all parties to ensure that this campaign is a success," he said.
Urging the public to recycle, he said the council spent RM34mil in 2005 compared to RM38mil in 2006 to dispose waste.
MBPJ environment committee chairman Datuk Dr Wong Sai Hou said the target for the programme was to collect 15 tonnes of unwanted computers during the campaign period.
"We hope this campaign, with the incentive, can raise awareness and improve the attitude of Malaysians in recycling," said Wong.
