USM, MMU earn top honours
PUTRAJAYA: Teams from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Multimedia University (MMU) won grand prizes in the MSC Malaysia-Institutions of Higher Learning Business Plan Competition 2007/08.
The four-man team from USM took top honours in the business plan category of the competition while the two-man MMU team scored highest in the business idea category.
USM's team comprised students Dr Seow Siew Hua, Ting Tin Tin, Shee Mooi Yee and Chan Yew Hiok, who are all doing their masters.
Students Hafriz Zulpakar and Adi Azfar Mohd Nor represented MMU.
They took home trophies, certificates and a cash prize RM5,000 for the winning business plan and RM3,000 for the best business idea.
The competition, already into its fourth year, is a collaborative effort by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) which is custodian of the MSC Malaysia initiative and institutions of higher learning in the country.
MDeC chief operating officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the competition is aimed at nurturing the technopreneur spirit among university students, academicians and researchers, as well as provide them with a platform to explore opportunities in turning their ideas into businesses.
There were more participants in both categories of the contest, compared to last year's event.
The business idea category received 219 entries this year, against 124 last year. In the business plan category, 39 entries were sent in, as opposed to 20 previously. ZAM KARIM
