WCIT 2008: MDeC takes centre stage
THE Multimedia Development Corporation, guardian of the MSC Malaysia initiative, is making a huge splash at the World Congress on Information Technology 2008.
More than 150 MSC Malaysia-status companies are using the international platform to showcase their products and services on the 100,000 sq ft exhibition floor at the Plenary Hall of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Also there are showcases by Pikom Software and Services, organised by the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia; PC Fair International; and foreign companies.
More than 50,000 visitors are expected to tour the exhibition floor by the time WCIT 2008 closes on Thursday.
Until then, In.Tech will be highlighting the companies on the exhibition floor.
SnT Global Sdn Bhd
This company says its business is all about innovating and offering customised outsourcing solutions to a broad spectrum of industries.
Its solution, called the Hosted eLogistics Platform (HeLP), is being deployed in industries such as ICT (information and communications technology), consumer electronics, and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).
As part of its plan to continually lower costs for its customers, it is now embarking on an energy conservation move, said Jimmy Ho, its marcom manager.
The system it is working on will offer power savings of 15% to 20%, he said, adding that power is a variable cost that is easier to reduce than that for materials or labour.
Megacenter System Sdn Bhd
Here is a datacentre and ICT infrastructure services provider that wants to take managed datacentre services to another level. The company claims it is the first to build a Tier IV datacentre, which offers 99.995% availability.
Such a datacentre has multiple active power and cooling distribution paths, redundant components, and is extremely fault tolerant.
Megacenter’s new Tier IV datacentre, which is housed in a 72,000sq ft building, will offer its clients a new level of services not available before, said representative Abdul Halim Mohd Lassim.
The company offers fully customisable total-backup solutions to ensure business continuity, Internet hosting facilities and services with security and high-bandwidth connectivity, as well as consultancy and services for purpose-built datacenters.
Fifth Media Sdn Bhd / ENT Quest Sdn Bhd
Setting up a communications system in an office can be a complicated process but that will no longer be the case with Axia SOHO, offered by these two firms.
The device is a complete office-automation solution with HSDPA, WiFi, SIP and VoIP communications, IP-PBX calling features, and print server.
“Just insert a 3G SIM into the Axia and you will have a uniquely versatile convergence platform for your SOHO (small office, home office),” said Yogi Barbia, chief program officer for Fifth Media, the global marketing arm for ENT Quest.
Axia also comes with value-added applications, such as groupware and calendaring to help companies manage their business more efficiently and effectively, he added.
Synamatix Sdn Bhd
This company’s work is heavily focused on addressing the management and analysis of data from second generation DNA sequencers and their application, for personalised medicines and enhanced crops.
It is showcasing its SynaBASE software which uses proprietary self-learning algorithms that finds and stores patterns data into a dynamic network architecture.
Any application utilising SynaBASE will see a performance jump of between 100x and 10,000x, said Robert Hercus, the company’s representative.
Synamatix, which has successfully licensed its software to leading genome research institutions in the United States, Europe, Australia and Singapore, said it is continually improving its product.
Tricubes Bhd
The mobile-application solutions provider highlighted its mobile smartcard reader, the Tricubes T4000.
Its chief technology officer, Ahmad Azhar, said the new solution is aimed at assisting traffic policeman issue summonses to offenders.
The T4000 is a small, lightweight add-on that is compatible with Hewlett-Packard iPAQ 6965 and 6515 series personal digital assistants (PDAs). It is able to read personal information from Malaysian identity cards and extends the PDA’s battery life by about 12 hours, the company said.
Azhar said the system has many practical applications for the police force, aside from allowing for the smoother processing of traffic summonses.
CWorks Systems Bhd
The highlight here is the company’s building-maintenance software solutions suite which comprises CWorks PLUS and CWorks NETMain.
This solutions provider said PLUS is designed for maintenance operations that need to manage work orders, materials and purchases.
The software is based on Microsoft Access and allows users to customise their database for each maintenance job.
CWorks other software solution, NETMain, offers web-based solutions to meet the requirements of operations with multiple sites and large maintenance teams.
Customers can use it to schedule and track tasks, as well as implement work prioritisation programmes to ensure efficiency and increase productivity.
Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd
Finding yourself lost in London will soon be a thing of the past. Mobile-content developer Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd, is showcasing its mobile map application called AZ Finder.
Chief Technology Officer Azrul Madisa said the Java application allows mobile phone users to download maps of streets directly to their handsets.
Users will be able to use the map application to explore the streets of London and bookmark any places of interests that they find.
A key feature of the application is the ability to search for streets using keywords, and to search for landmarks such as subway stations or tourist attractions. The locations can then be bookmarked.
The company has no plans to localise its application for the Malaysian market.
Xybase Sdn Bhd
The systems integrator is displaying its airport-management system, Xybase Airport System Integration Methodolgy (XASIM), which has been deployed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Its system provides airports with an integrated architecture to ensure that automated operations are carried out effectively and efficiently.
Designed to meet the needs of most modern airports, the system assists airport authorities with flight-scheduling programs and offers a terminal-management system to provide managers with a bird’s eyeview of airport operations. Other practical uses of the system is its ability to manage airport functions, such as baggage conveyor belts and critical resource-management.
Another feature of the system is its ability to measure the performance of airport shop tenants, allowing airport management to analyse and make improvements to airport layouts and facilities.
Scicom (MSC) Bhd
This outsourcing specialist is offering services centered on assisting businesses to run callcentres.
Its business development assistant manager, Melvin Lee Pek Hup, said the company offers services for businesses that require help running a customer service centre or helpdesk.
The company also provides training for business employees through its Scicom Academy — a strategic arm that specialises in providing educational programmes to develop the soft skills needed in callcentres.
“We give our clients insights on how well their callcentres are operating and look for new ways to improve their operations,” said Lee.
Scicom has also expanded its business to the United States and India.
Microlink Solutions Bhd
Local end-to-end banking solutions provider Microlink is proud of its MiBS (Microlink Banking Solutions) technology, which provides users with an intuitive interface that automates many common banking processes.
Azidah Hassan, director of business development, said MiBS is a highly flexible solution that can be easily configured for the specific needs of most banks.
She explained that modules can either be implemented independently or integrated into a bank’s existing infrastructure, saving the bank money, instead of having to implement an entirely new system.
According to Azidah, MiBS is an open-system technology that is capable of supporting most operating systems, such as Sun Solaris, Linux and Microsoft Windows.
CIMB Islamic, Bank Rakyat and Bank Muamalat are currently using its banking solutions, said Microlink.
iSentric Sdn Bhd
This company is showing its Mobile Banking Solution Technology, which is an end-to-end product for integrating mobile banking features into an existing banking system.
Currently utilised by AmBank Group and Al Rajhi bank, the system features an easy to use interface, is compatible with a wide range of mobile phones, and is a flexible product that scales with the bank’s needs, according to the company.
iSentric has also developed a Mobility2U solution that allows businesses to use SMS for marketing and advertisement purposes.
Mobility2U, which can be accessed from the Web, allows businesses to send bulk SMSes at 6,000 SMSes per click and at a speed of 14 messages per second.
JobStreet.com Sdn Bhd
One of the leading recruitment companies in Asia, it is offering a complete suite of solutions for organisations to recruit staff quickly and cost effectively.
It claims to have the largest database of job seekers in Malaysia and operates in six other countries, including India, Singapore, Bangladesh and Japan, said Eric Sito, its general manager.
Some of the services it offers include campus recruitment services which allow companies to recruit promising fresh graduates directly from universities and colleges; an e-recruitment solution that lets companies easily set up their own corporate career site; and branding and attraction services to entice the right candidates.
Multimedia Prospect Sdn Bhd
It focuses on developing and integrating electronic commerce systems for online and wireless deployment.
The company is currently promoting its customer loyalty management solution (CLMS), which allows companies to issue cards to its customers for collecting loyalty points.
The system comes with several modules, including a membership module that provides an administration tool for the management of user and company profiles; a content management module for publishing newsletters and brochures; and a point management module that allows participating companies to manage loyalty points.
CLMS also allows companies to set up a portal for cardholders to redeem or purchase products online, said Chin Shea Swong, executive director at Multimedia Prospect.
Pulse Group
An online marketing-research company, it is showcasing its social-networking product, called Planet Pulse, which is an online community made up of online survey responders who answer questionaires and get rewarded.
Community members are connected via platforms like online forums and blogs which allow them to correspond with each other and share their views on surveys.
Chief executive officer Bob Chua says Planet Pulse offers something different from Facebook in that it rewards survey respondents with “Pulse” points which can be redeemed for either cash or gifts.
“Planet Pulse is a far reaching market survey tool that can be useful for companies that are not familiar with the Asian marketplace,” says Chua.
He adds that one benefit of using Planet Pulse is that the company is able to tap into a wide spectrum of users from a diverse number fo channels, which offers a more representative view of the market.
Green Packet
This technology company is highlighting its online surveillance system, PacketEyes, a wireless base solution which can be used for monitoring homes, businesses or public areas.
The surveillance system offers users instant real-time monitoring through a 3G-enabled mobile phone or at a click of mouse at its web portal, www.packeteyes.com
Green Packet special project manager Zulkiflee Osman says PacketEyes is easy to install; only requiring users to place one or two web cameras around their house and they can monitor activities in their home from their workplace online.
The company said the PacketEyes equipment is available for RM1,428 (two cameras) and RM2,488 (four cameras). Users will also need to pay monthly charges for accessing the service.
Airocom Technology Bhd
The software applications developer has AiroAd, a wireless multimedia advertising platform that will allow advertising agencies to easily manage video advertisements from a centralised command centre.
“The entire system is easy to manage with video scheduling to manage different advertisements that need to be aired at different times,” says Airocom chief technology officer Hamzah Ismail.
He says the company is focusing on having its advertising screens fitted in shopping malls, retail outlets and even inside taxis.
“We are also looking into providing community advertising in the near future, where people can put up SMS or MMS messages on our screens for a small fee,” Hamzah adds.
Les’ Copaque Production Sdn Bhd
The company that won the Best Film (Animation) award at the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival 2007 for its Upin and Ipin TV series, is working on what it claims is Malaysia’s first 3D animated film.
Geng: The Adventure Begins is expected to cost RM4mil and will be completed at the end of the year, says Haji Burhanuddin Md Radzi, its managing director.
The movie, which is about two teenagers who have to solve the mystery of missing durians when they visit their kampung, received a RM1mil grant from the Government’s e-content fund.
Rendering services is being provided by Mimos through KnowledgeGRID Malaysia, a national grid of desktops, servers, storage, databases, and scientific instruments.
Next year, the company plans to have the animated movie translated into English or Hindi for the international market, Burhanuddin says.
He adds that this will help put Malaysia on the global map as a country capable of creating successful animated movies.
iTopia Sdn Bhd
A telecommunications solutions specialist, this company is demonstrating how it successfully built a “digital city” in China’s north-eastern port city of Suifenhe by blanketing it with WiFi.
By using iTopia’s customised handphones and wristwatch with phone capability, users are able to access real-time entertainment, e-government services, as well as commercial and retail applications.
The company is also a telecommunications virtual network operator that provides services such as billing support system (BSS) and operations support system (OSS), and builds specialised mobile phones.
Currently its products and services are being deployed in China, the Middle East, Vietnam, and the Philippines, says Joe Lim, iTopia general manager for China and Vietnam.
QubeConnect Sdn Bhd
Internet Protocol telephony solutions provider, QubeConnect is highlighting its unified communications technology which keeps users in touch by bridging various communications networks, such as traditional telephone exchange, mobile phone and Voice-over-Internet Protocol seamlessly.
The user will only have to use one number and when a call is placed to the person, it will automatically be routed to the correct device.
And with its Inter-QubeTalk-Exchange (IQX), companies can enjoy a unified communications network for the entire enterprise without the need to upgrade their existing network infrastructure, says Dinesh Nair, its chief technology officer.
IQX also reduces bandwidth requirements by up to 60% with a reduction in packet congestion by 90%, he adds.
Symphony BPO Solutions Sdn Bhd
Symphony wants to be recognised as Asia’s leading outsourcing partner by offering BPO (business process outsourcing) in contact management, human resource, financial services, cheque processing and more.
It is currently servicing 32 countries and has more than 3,000 clients from private and public-listed companies to Fortune/Global 500 companies, says Nadeem Rahman, Symphony’s director of HR solutions. Malaysia is ideal for running BPO because of its location which puts in a time zone that is ideal for handling transactions in a lot of countries, he says.

This company is offering its human resource management system called ThinkHR.
“Managing an organisation’s human resource (HR) database can be challenging so we have come up with ThinkHR — a simple solution to solve common problems HR managers face,” said its professional services director, Salina Isa.
ThinkHR is comprised of individual modules that cover organisational planning, performance management, appraisal management, and employee management.
Each of these has strategic and an operational sub-component aimed at different functions such as ThinkPayroll, an employee payroll management system; ThinkHRM, a system for employee personal details; and t-Claim, an expense tracking solution for employee claims.
The application suite is highly customisable and can either be hosted in an organisation’s headquarters or be entirely web-based.
CSF Advisers Sdn Bhd
Building infrastructure for storing high-end datacentres is all in a day’s work for this company that specialises in maintaining datacentres.
According to CSF Advisers group managing director Adrian Yong, it largely caters for high-end datacenters, by renting out facilities for businesses to store critical operational data.
The repository can also function as a disaster recovery centre in the event something happens to the headquarters.
“We also provide services for clients building their own datacentres. We handle everything from overseeing of the construction process to ensuring that the buildings are adequately designed to house the large data servers,” Yong says.
eProtea Asia Sdn Bhd
This enterprise software solutions provider has a comprehensive credit-card solution — Cardworks 2007. Developed in the Java language, eProtea says the solution provides a robust set of card management facilities, such as authorisation, issuing and fraud detection. Jeffery Fok, the company’s managing director, says Cardworks 2007 is a fully scalable solution that focuses on custom tailoring credit-card solutions to address a financial institution’s backend processing while allowing it to concentrate on its core business. Cardworks 2007 is capable of processing up to 300,000 accounts within six hours and to authorise 100 transactions per second.
Computer-Based Learning Sdn Bhd
The education software developer is pushing ASSETBase, its accounts training software targeted at SPM level secondary school students.
To facilitate the learning process, ASSETBase provides in-depth discussion topics and material that corresponds with the SPM Accounting subject syllabus.
“Most learners are exposed to the industry software with limited experience and miss out on fundamental bookkeeping skills, thus limiting their knowledge,” says CBL administrative executive Faemah Ismail.
“With ASSETBase, we provide students with a computerised learning platform to reinforce the basics of accounting knowledge.”
ASSETBase is recognised by professional accounting and examination bodies such as the London Chambers of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board (LCCI) and the Association of Certified Charted Accountants (ACCA).
EzyPzy Sdn Bhd
Technopreneur startup company EzyPzy is highlighting its contact management system web-application, called EzyPzy (pronounced easy peasy) that aims to simplify processes like managing contacts and selling items or properties online.
The service will allow users to manage all their contacts with ease, as well as deliver and disseminate information.
Users can utilise EzyPzy for free and can access all its features, such as creating custom fields to manage contact details, send SMSes or e-mail and set reminders for tasks to be done.
EzyPzy chief executive officer Aaron Gill said the web application can even be used as an online classifieds advertising site for individuals to solicit products, real estate or services.
The company is planning to roll out EzyPzy in Singapore in two months time and will implement a cellphone agent lets users backup their phone contacts and SMSes to their EzyPzy account.
Silverlake Axis Ltd
This company says its highly-adaptive banking solutions can help financial institutions quickly address challenges and leverage opportunities.
“Silverlake Axis Integrated Banking Solution (SIBS) supports conventional banking, Islamic banking and micro-banking services that meet regional and global banking requirements,” says Dr Raymond Kwong, its managing director.
The system, which supports several languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic, enables speedy definition of new products and services through more than 10,000 user configurable and pre-integrated objects.
NGC Systems Sdn Bhd
Telcos that have heavily invested in 3G (third-generation) networks still do not see a big return on investment because 3G services are still underutilised, says NGC Systems. It is hoping to remedy the situation through its range of 3G applications.
Called the Genico 3G PocketSeries, it comprises 3G Pocket Clips, 3G PocketLove, 3G PocketTalk and 3G PocketAd, says Terrence Chong, vice-president for marketing and business development.
PocketClips offers a personalised interactive video portal that allows users to log on and access their favourite video clips, send and receive videos, start a multi-party conference call to watch the same clip simultaneously, and more.
PocketTalk is a 3G video-messaging application that allows users to send a voicemail using an avatar of their choice and this service is currently being offered by Maxis as Video Avatars.
PocketLove is for finding friends with similar interests while PocketAd allows businesses to offer video advertising.
Multimedia Research Lab Sdn Bhd
Most videoconferencing systems only offer point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connections but this vendor says it is the first to develop a system that allows multipoint-to-multipoint sessions.
Its Multimedia Conferencing System (MCS) supports an unlimited number of sessions and its firewall traversal feature ensures better connectivity with all users, says Nursyamshadiha Mohd Yunus, its marketing manager.
It also features document collaboration capabilities with real-time sharing and editing, and also includes a standalone utility that records the videoconference, she says.
Mobile Wallet Sdn Bhd
This vendor wants to turn your handphone into an e-wallet so that you can pay bills and shop anytime, anywhere.
Users have a choice of accessing the service via SMS, which involves typing commands, or by installing software that provides an easy-to-use interface.
With Mobile Wallet users will be able to reload prepaid plans such as mobile prepaid or IDD cards, pay bills from major utilities such as water and electricity; purchase insurance for vehicles, and shop with supported merchants.
Currently, there are more than 200 merchants in the Klang Valley that support the Mobile Wallet payment system, says Eddy Lee, assistant manager for Mobile Wallet’s direct marketing division.
The company is also planning to introduce a Visa debit card but declined to give further details.
VADS e-Services Sdn Bhd
Here is an MSC company that has been offering managed network services and systems integration services for some 10 years now.
