Four to the fore

Last month we received all types of nifty gadgets and products but only four stood out.

The PICD (Pry It from our Cold, Dead fingers) award for the month of May goes to Altec Lansung InMotion IM600, AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 ED, NEC Powermate P5000 and Pentax Optio A40.

Altec Lansung InMotion IM600

MANY iPod sound docks on the market lack the solid build quality and terrific sound quality of the IM600.

It supports the latest iPod models, including the iPod touch, and the IM600 isn’t limited to just playing music from the iPod.

InMotion IM600

It has a built-in FM radio and accepts external audio via a 3.5mm stereo input.

Plus, the IM600 is able to play music anywhere thanks to its built-in lithium ion battery, which is good for up to 7.5 hours of music playback.

The IM600 is a competent and reasonably priced sound dock for iPod devices.

Pros: Well thought-out design; audio quality is reasonably good; built-in FM radio.

Cons: Sound tends to break up at higher volumes; no option for iPod touch to be docked in landscape orientation.

AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 ED

Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 ED

Nikon has updated its famous Micro Nikkor 60mm and although it retains much of the same shape and design of its predecessor, the lens has been improved in all areas.

It includes the company’s latest technology such as internal focus design, silent AF-S motor and Nano Crystal Coat anti-reflective coating.

And because it uses the internal-focus Silent Wave motor (AF-S) design, the lens no longer extends out at all as you focus closer.

If you are looking to delve into the world of macro photography, the Micro Nikkor 60mm might just be the lens for you.

Pros: AF-S design means whisper-quiet operation; internal focusing so lens does not extend.

Cons: A hint of chromatic aberration on the edges of the frame.

NEC Powermate P5000

Powermate P5000

All-in-one PCs are a rare sight these days so we were lucky to get hold of the P5000.

The P5000 completely integrates the gut of the computer into the back of the screen, so it pretty much looks like an iMac.

It’s essentially a mobile desktop computer that is slim and lightweight. This was mainly achieved by using notebook components for the processor, RAM, hard disk and motherboard. Another cool thing about the P5000 is that both the keyboard and mouse are wireless so there are no messy cables.

A silent performer, the P5000 is capable of running essential programs such as Microsoft Office and even Photoshop Elements.

If you are looking for a mobile desktop computer, the P5000 is worth considering.

Pros: Stylish; small footprint; quiet; luggable; no messy cables.

Cons: Average performance; difficult to upgrade components.

Pentax Optio A40

Optio A40

The A40 is a lightweight compact camera with a whopping 12-megapixel sensor for capturing that extra amount of detail.

The A40 comes with lots of features such as face detection, shake reduction and a dynamic range optimiser that will prove invaluable to amateur photographers.

Also, it has a quick start-up time and delivers terrific picture quality and video recordings.

Overall, the A40 is a reliable camera you can count on for taking great shots.

Pros: Lightweight design; good autofocus; records decent videos.

Cons: Autofocus slows down under dim lighting; clunky menu system.
