BSA goes on YouTube to look for ‘superheroes’
KUALA LUMPUR: Antipiracy watchdog the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has just put up a video on YouTube, which urges the public to become “superheroes” by reporting businesses that use illegal copies of software.
The minute-long video, titled Superhero Fighting Software Piracy, can be found at http://tinyurl.com/yk4kmxt and was made in Singapore at the cost of US$25,000 (RM90,000).
Roland Chan, senior director of marketing at BSA Asia Pacific, said the purpose of the video is to generate software piracy leads for it in the region.
“We are (also) constantly exploring new ways to get our antipiracy message across to the public,” he said.
Chan said this is the first time the BSA is using YouTube, a popular video-sharing site worldwide, to reach out to people.
Also, it is not widely publicising the video through an advertising campaign and hopes its message will spread by word of mouth.
If this video is successful, there may be more of such antipiracy shortfilms in the future, said Chan. Some countries in the region are mulling over holding competitions to produce such videos but he declined to say when this would happen.
Anyone wanting to be a superhero for the BSA can report companies using pirated software at this website, http://reportpiracy.asia.
