Tweak this router
PETALING JAYA: Why go for a plain vanilla router when you can get one that you can customise with applications?
Netgear’s latest WNR3500L wireless-N router supports Linux-based firmware such as DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato which already have a pool of software created by open-source developers.
Just surf to the open-source community website MyOpenRouter to download applications such as a speed booster for online gaming, remote access utility and hotspot solutions.
WNR3500L has a 480MHz MIPS 74K processor with hardware acceleration, and 8MB of flash memory and 64MB of RAM, which is enough to run even business-class applications, claims the company.
The router features four gigabit Ethernet ports with auto-sensing technology, a built-in USB 2.0 port to plug in a network storage device or USB modem for a wireless broadband connectivity.
The USB port also supports the new USB ReadyShare feature which allows users to connect and share data on a USB drive across the network or over the Internet — this effectively turns the router into a media server.
To protect the network from hackers and intruders, the router offers the standard WPA, WPA2-PSK and WPS security options, a firewall and other functions.
The WNR3500L retails for RM475.
