Hitachi courts telcos

AS TELCOS grow their businesses, it is important for them to have an efficient and innovative infrastructure, according to managing director of Hitachi Data Systems Malaysia Johnson Khoo.

“With the growing relevance of telecommunications companies in other sectors such as mobile Internet and mobile media, telcos are faced with a number of new challenges these days,” Khoo said.

“End users are demanding lower prices and better service — this is difficult if you have to spend more money on new infrastructure.”

To this end, Hitachi is positioning itself to assist telcos by offering services to consolidate existing infrastructure, improving efficiency of operation and storage.

“Telcos may have thousands of customers stored on more than 100 servers running different types of applications and this may cause operational difficulties,” Khoo said.

“We are offering a virtualisation-based data strategy to improve operational efficiency whereby the servers are being used to their maximum capacity and management is simplified.”

Khoo went on to say that many telcos and other companies are not managing their storage properly, purchasing new storage infrastructure while the old ones are under-utilised.

He said that Hitachi is offering a storage area network (SAN) implementation which can help telco operators unlock value from existing data and address the issue of scalability by optimising resource usage and enabling storage to be provisioned easily.

“In terms of business, it would be more beneficial for us to sell our customers more equipment,” Khoo admitted.

“But this is not what is best for our customers as they can save money by better managing what they already have and we can help them achieve that.” — STEFAN NAIDU
