Dell has new laptops to draw SMBs

KUALA LUMPUR: In the current economic environment, small businesses are relying on productivity and collaboration solutions more heavily than ever before, said computer maker Dell Inc.

It said the companies are turning to videoconferencing and collaboration solutions as a cost-effective alternative to business travel, in order to cut operating costs.

Dell quoted an IDC survey which predicts that by year end, close to 35% of small- and medium-scale businesses (SMBs) nationwide will be using videoconferencing.

To meet this need, the PC maker has launched new Vostro laptops that are designed for SMBs looking to maximise staff productivity amidst shrinking travel budgets.

The portable computers come pre-installed with videoconferencing and webcam software if you choose the models that have an integrated webcam and microphone.

Dell’s newest laptops include the 13.3in (screen) Vostro 1320, 15.4in Vostro 1520, and 17in Vostro 1720. These are just becoming available in the local market.

It has also taken into account the concern of businesses for data safety. The updated Vostros offer more security options than similar devices from rival PC makers, said Dell.

Among these options are solid-state drives for better protection against impact damage, fingerprint readers, and encrypted hard drives.

Pricing for the laptops start from RM2,499 for the Vostro 1320 and RM2,699 for the 1520. The pricing is dependent on system specifications. No pricing was given for the 1720 in Dell’s press release.
