IPOH: Enforcement officers arrested a 29-year-old man and seized RM270,000 worth of pirated computer games during a raid at an cybercafé in Taiping, some 100km from here.
Perak Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department enforcement officers raided the cybercafé at a shophouse on Jalan Maharajalela in Taiping at about 1pm on Wednesday.
Department deputy director Mohd Shahar Osman said the officers confiscated 106 computers containing 530 copies of various computer games including various editions of the Counterstrike line, Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead.
“Each game is estimated to be worth between RM80 and RM138,” he said in a press conference Thursday.
Mohd Shahar said that two computer servers and one billing computer were also confiscated.
“In total, we confiscated more than RM300,000 worth of goods from the cybercafé,” he said.
He said that the youth was released on police bail on the same day after his statement was recorded.
”We believe that the cybercafé has been operating using these pirated goods for about one year now,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 41(1)(d) of the Copyright Act 1987.
Mohd Shahar said that this was the fourth such case that the department had encountered this year.
“We would like to warn other operators against using pirated products in their premises.
“If a person is found to be guilty of owning, renting or selling such pirated products, they would be liable to a fine of no less than RM2,000 for each copy or no more than RM20,000 or a jail term of no more than five years or both,” he said.
He also warned the public against purchasing pirated products and urged them to call the department at 1-800-886-800 to lodge reports against such perpetrators.
