Nokia smartphones to get Office

SEATTLE: Microsoft is working with Nokia to put Office software and other programs on smartphones.

The companies say people will be able to read, edit and create new Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote programs on Nokia smartphones.

Nokia’s phones run an operating system called Symbian that competes with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.

The phones will also work with Microsoft’s Unified Communications system, which brings together Internet-based phones, instant messaging, e-mail and online conferencing for a company’s employees.

Both vendors say Nokia smartphones with Microsoft communication software will start shipping next year, and Office programs will come later.
