Panasonic shows off its tough side

CF-F8

PANASONIC’S two new “business-rugged” ToughBook models, the CF-F8 and CF-W8, are encased in a durable magnesium alloy case designed to protect them from vibration, spills, extreme temperature and other rough handling.

These notebooks are capable of enduring up to 100kg of pressure on their lids and falls from 76cm (2.5 feet) in the air while switched on, Panasonic claimed.

In addition, their spill-proof keyboards are designed to withstand a 200ml soaking, with every drop of liquid able to filter out through the drainage channels, leaving the electronics unscathed.

Despite all their “protective gear” these notebook are still surprisingly lightweight, with the F8 tipping the scales at only 1.66kg and the W8 at a mere 1.28kg.

The F8 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor (2.26GHz) with 6MB L2 cache, 3GB DDR2 SDRAM and an integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. It has a 14.1in WXGA LCD screen and a 160GB hard drive.

Its body sports an integrated carry handle in the front for easy transportation. The handle is spring-loaded and can be folded in when it is not in use, Panasonic said.

A single charge gives the RM10,399 notebook up to six hours of battery life, Panasonic added.

The W8 comes with a slightly smaller 12.1in XGA anti-glare LCD monitor, which has a native resolution of 1,024 x 768-pixels.

It is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 processor (1.2GHz) with 3MB L2 cache. This model also packs 1GB of memory, Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics and a 120GB hard disk.

The RM9,299 notebook has a long battery life that can last up to seven hours, Panasonic claimed.

These new Toughbooks are also equipped with top-loading DVD burners, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, three USB2.0 ports as well as an SDHC card slot.
