SAP is all for higher education

KUALA LUMPUR: Germany-based business software solutions company SAP AG is moving into providing management and finance applications aimed at helping institutes of higher education improve their business infrastructure.

“We can help universities better manage administrative responsibilities, such as student records and accounting for fees and grants, as well as provide a system for student recruitment,” said Dr Malcolm Woodfield, director of SAP’s global business development for higher education and research.

“Our product, known as SAP For Higher Education, is also able to clearly show student information, classes available and grants issued, as well as plan classes and exams accordingly. This would help any university greatly improve its business model.”

Woodfield noted that in tough economic conditions, public and private institutes of higher education could benefit from making the business of teaching easier by streamlining administrative and funding requirements with advanced management software.

“Most times, people hired for the purpose of educating or research are required to perform tasks of a business or administrative nature,” he said. “Asking an educator to juggle various responsibilities can lead to a reduction in the quality of his work.”

Many world-renowned universities have deployed at least one version of SAP’s software, including Johns Hopkins University (Maryland) and Duke University (North Carolina) in the United States.

According to Woodfield, SAP is in talks with the Education Ministry and several local private institutions to implement various products under the SAP For Higher Education umbrella. But he declined to provide specifics.
