PETALING JAYA: Microsoft’s popular instant messaging program which many still know by its original name, MSN Messenger, is 10 years old this year.

Created in 1999 and renamed Windows Live Messenger in 2005, it is currently used by more than 2.5 million Malaysians sending over 44 million messages per day, according to Microsoft.

“We are celebrating a successful decade as users from around the world have embraced Messenger,” said marketing director of Microsoft’s online services group for South-East Asia, Craig Law-Smith.

“Now we offer more features than ever before having partnered with more than 20 social networking sites including Twitter and Facebook.”

The latest version of Messenger includes the option to upload videos on user profiles, customise specific chat windows and allows users to create a favourites list which is akin to speed dialing.

The latest version is Windows Live Messenger 14.0 which was released in July. —STEFAN NAIDU
