Apple uncages Snow Leopard

KUALA LUMPUR: The latest version of the Apple operating system is now available for Mac users.

Mac OS X v10.6 (codenamed Snow Leopard) is designed to be enhanced but fundamentally similar to its predecessor known simply as Leopard.

“We stripped down the code for Leopard to see where we could make improvements for both speed and functionality,” said senior software product marketing manager for Apple Asia Pacific Darren Sng.

“Over 90% of the applications and other features have been enhanced to make our operating system even more intuitive.”

Features that have been enhanced include the search tool Finder and backup program Time Machine — both of which have been made faster and more responsive, the company said.

Snow Leopard comes bundled with Safari 4, QuickTime X and built-in support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

“The new version is also half the size of the previous one as we have made the new code more efficient and compressed many applications,” said Sng. “This means that users who are upgrading from Leopard can free up at least 7GB in hard disk space.”

The Snow Leopard family pack, which includes five licences, has a suggested retail price of RM189. For existing Leopard users, an upgrade licence to Snow Leopard will cost RM109. — STEFAN NAIDU
