Ruumz adds a mobile web portal to its site

KUALA LUMPUR: Ruumz.com, a social networking site, has added a mobile web portal that targets most smartphone and portable computer users in the country.

The portal features an online radio service, music store, a list of what’s screening in local cineplexes, and solat times for Muslims to break their fast during the month of Ramandan.

It also offers snapshots from traffic cameras so that motorists can better plan their routes to avoid jams or congested areas. It is compatible with Nokia and Sony Ericsson phone operating systems, as well as the iPhone’s Safari browser.

Operated by local company ruumzNation, the site has about 20,000 registered users and its chief executive, James Chong, said the newly launched portal will help extend the site’s reach to more Malaysians.

“We are trying to reach a wider audience by providing a mobile service with many applications that will be useful to Malaysians.” he said.

Faced with competition from foreign-owned social networking sites, such as Facebook and Friendster, ruumz.com is trying to carve out a niche for itself.

“We feature Malaysian artistes on our online radio and we support local film-making projects, such as 15Malaysia,” said Chong.

15Malaysia is a shortfilm project where 15 movies by Malaysian filmmakers are available for viewing and download on the website.

Ruumz.com is working to introduce a trading platform on its site, where users can sell goods online. But it’s early days yet and Chong declined to provide details on this service.

The company is a member of the Green Packet Bhd group of companies, The group also owns Packet One Networks (Malaysia) which operates a WiMAX wireless broadband Internet service in the country.
